SUMMARY:Maritime Lecture Series: USS Houston (CA-30)/POW Experience
DESCRIPTION:Maritime Lecture Series featuring John Schwarz\, Executive Director of the USS Houston (CA-30) Survivors’ Association and Next Generations\n  \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Houston Maritime Center & Museum invites you to join us for a special lecture on Tuesday\, March 3rd\, featuring John Schwarz\, Executive Director of the USS Houston (CA-30) Survivors’ Association and Next Generations. Mr. Schwarz will recount the events surrounding the loss of the USS Houston and provide an in-depth look at the experiences of its survivors as prisoners of war during World War II. \nThe story of the WWII U.S. Navy heavy cruiser USS Houston (CA-30) exemplifies remarkable naval courage under extreme adversity while serving the United States. Led by Captain Albert Rooks\, the crew fought valiantly until the ship’s tragic sinking at the Battle of Sunda Strait on March 1\, 1942\, which resulted in the loss of nearly 700 young sailors. Survivors faced even greater hardships as prisoners of war throughout the remainder of WWII\, enduring harsh conditions. Most were sent to Burma and forced to help build the infamous Burma-Thailand Death Railway. James Hornfischer’s book ‘Ship of Ghosts’ provides a vivid account of this ordeal\, and the 1957 award-winning war film ‘Bridge on the River Kwai’ offers a dramatic depiction of their experiences.

SUMMARY:Maritime Monday: From the Car to the Sea
DESCRIPTION:Maritime Monday featuring an exciting expert panel\n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Join us for our signature Maritime Monday monthly lecture series featuring an exciting panel of experts. Come to hear their insights on the nature of the cruise industry and its prospects for Galveston and Houston\, then stay for a networking happy hour and after-hours viewing of the museum exhibits. \n\nJean-Paul Rodrigue\, Ph.D.\, Professor\, Texas A&M University-Galveston\nBrett B. Milutin\, Executive Deputy Port Director\, Port of Galveston\nMichael Ziesemer\, General Manager\, SSA Marine\n\nLecture details: \nThe Port of Galveston has emerged as the fourth-most-popular cruise port in the US\, serving the Houston metropolitan area. More than 3 million cruise passengers were handled in 2024\, with expectations of 3.5 million in 2025\, making it an economic driver for the region. The addition of a new cruise terminal (Pier 16) in 2025 to the existing three terminals is a strong indication of the popularity of cruises for Texans. Galveston is a drive-to cruise port\, underscoring that most cruisers drive to the city before boarding. Parking is generating substantial revenue for the port and private parking providers\, but it also creates congestion challenges during the short ship turnaround time. The presentation discusses the nature of the cruise industry and its prospects for Galveston and Houston.
