Nathaniel Bowditch and an Introduction to Maritime Navigation
This module has been created for presentation to middle school students. It features Carry On, Mr. Bowditch by Jean Lee Latham, an award-winning children’s book. It also covers an introduction to maritime navigation, as well as hitting on a variety of TEKs skills including:
- Grade 6: Geography. The student uses maps, globes, graphs, charts, models, and databases geographic tools to answer geographic questions.
- Grade 6: Geography. The student understands the impact of interactions between people and the physical environment on the development physical processes and the physical environment on humans. and conditions
- Grade 7: Social studies skills. The student applies critical-thinking skills to organize and use information acquired through established research methodologies from a variety of valid sources, including electronic technology.
- Grade 8: History. The student understands the causes of exploration and colonization eras.
- Grade 8: Geography. The student uses geographic tools to collect, analyze, and interpret data.

Presenters
Milt Rose
B.S. Marine Engineering – U.S. Coast Guard Academy, 1967, M.B.A. – University of Denver, 1972
Milt has over 40 years’ experience in the maritime industry, holding positions in operations, engineering, and senior management. Currently, Milt is an independent consultant on general marine industry issue and developments, with a particular expertise in the offshore vessel industry.
Milt is volunteering his time for:
- Houston Maritime Museum – Advisory Board member and docent
- Houston Food Bank
- U.S. Coast Guard Academy Alumni Association – Former board member and currently 1967 Class Gift Committee Chair
Peter Jensen
Peter earned a Bachelor of Science in Oceanography and a Third Mate Unlimited license from S.U.N.Y Maritime College and a Master of Science in Environmental Management from the University of Maryland. After retiring as a Commander in the U.S. Coast Guard and as an Emergency Preparedness and Response Advisor with Exxon Mobil Corporation, he completed the Bayou Land Conservancy (BLC) Ambassador Training and also Certified as a Texas Master Naturalist (Heartwood Chapter).
He is a member of the BLC Board, Trail and Conservation Crew. He is involved in conducting Surveys of the Conservation Easements that the BLC manages.
In addition, he volunteers at the Montgomery County Food Bank and as a Docent at the Houston Maritime Museum. In addition, Peter is a Board Member of Houston Early Music. Peter is an avid outdoors’ enthusiast and enjoys SCUBA Diving, Sailing and Hiking.
