Training is provided and no prior knowledge is required. Schedules are flexible, though we do recommend that volunteers spend at least four hours a month at the museum.

Volunteer Positions

Docents
Docents are encouraged to design their own tour of the museum highlighting their personal interests. No prior knowledge is required, and all volunteers receive training from Houston Maritime Center & Museum’s experienced guides. Tours usually last about one hour and each guide leads no more than ten visitors at a time. Docents are essential to the museum’s mission – the more guides we have, the more tours we can schedule, allowing us to share the wonder and influence of maritime history and industry with a wider audience.
Events
HMC&M hosts a variety of events including an annual celebration, monthly industry professional networking lectures, special fundraising events, and more. We’re always looking for volunteers who are customer service focused and enjoy interacting with guests at the museum. Volunteer time would include setting up for events, welcoming guests, running audio-visual equipment, breaking down events, and more.
Outreach
We are always looking to reach new audiences and expand our impact in the community. We need help connecting with new organizations and community groups to promote group tours, school visits and private rentals. Volunteers will help research contacts and connect with prospective organizations via phone and email.
Educational Programming
Inspire the next generation of maritime enthusiasts! Help spark curiosity and bring history f life by supporting our K–12 field trips and creating new and exciting educational programs. Your time and passion make hands-on learning possible for students across our community.
Front Desk
Love working with people and making people feel welcome? This role would be responsible for checking in visitors, processing gift shop sales, welcoming group tours and assisting with overall guest experiences at the museum.
Research & Content
Help expand our virtual exhibits by researching historical documents, reviewing museum exhibits and artifacts and writing digital content on a variety of topics. These positions can be done from home and would require occasional touch-base meetings.
Ship Model Maintenance & Repair
We are always looking for ship modelers who can assist with the maintenance and repair of our collection. You would work with our curator to assess any models that may need repairs and use your expert modeling skills to repair any damage or wear and tear the models may have suffered.
“Lighting up the imagination of young and old about sea history is a unique way to spend several pleasurable hours.”
