The port of Houston is the busiest port in vessel and barge movements and for the second year in the row, is the largest U.S. port by tonnage, with over 200 docks and 270 facilities. The port is also home to the largest petrochemical manufacturing complex in the nation and the largest Gulf Coast container port, handling 69% of the US Gulf Coast container traffic. Our channel supports more than 3 million jobs nationwide, and is responsible for economic activity approaching $1 trillion, including 20 percent of Texas GDP, and generates more than $38 billion in tax revenue annually. Port Bureau president Captain Bill Diehl will present an informative session on the greater Houston port region, Project 11, and the maritime business community.

Captain Diehl is President of the Greater Houston Port Bureau, a maritime trade organization serving 250 member companies in the Houston region. The Port Bureau supplies its members with detailed vessel traffic information, market analysis, and maritime expertise in safety, security, and environmental issues. Before coming to the Port Bureau, Bill served 31 years in the Coast Guard, culminating in commanding the largest operational unit in the Coast Guard: Sector Houston-Galveston. He has a Master’s Degree from the University of Michigan in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering, and is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Virginia.
